Learn to build and perform with a moving-mouth hand puppet (sock puppet) for camera use, using supplies found around the house!

Matt Sorensen is a performer, director, designer, puppeteer, and educator from Saranac Lake, NY. He has been an active company member of Pendragon Theatre since the fall of 2000. Over the years, Matt has been a leader in the Adirondack Region's theatre community, directing and designing productions for various educational, community, and professional theaters. He has also created props and puppets for many school groups and theaters around the country, including Anoka Ramsey College in Minneapolis, MN and University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT. He also just finished teaching his first all-virtual stage makeup class at the U of Utah. Matt received a BA in Theatre from SUNY Potsdam and an MFA in Puppetry from University of Connecticut's Theatre Arts Program. While at UCONN, he formed his company, Puppet Bucket Productions, with a mission to bring puppet theatre and educational puppetry workshops to students and families everywhere. Puppet Bucket has created puppets for various stage and film productions in the United States, England, and Australia.


For the Hand Puppet Workshop, you will need:

1 Sock

1 or 2 Ping pong balls OR 2 buttons

Cardboard (heavier is better)

Duct tape or gaffers tape

Small sheet of red and/or black felt

Scissors and/or a mat knife

Hot glue gun and hot glue sticks

And, to decorate:

Yarn, jewels, beads, pom poms, buttons, construction paper, felt, fabric, fun foam, pipe cleaners, and anything else you’d like!
